Shooting in Heber/Overgaard

Navajo County Deputies, Criminal Investigators, and the Major Crimes Apprehension Team (MCAT) arrested one subject involved in a shooting that occurred in the Heber/Overgaard area. On November 22, 2021, at approximately 3:36 pm, Deputies were dispatched to Family Dollar in Overgaard for a report of an individual attempting to get into vehicles that did not belong to the subject. When employees from Family Dollar confronted the subject, he advised he had been shot and needed help. The employees said they would call emergency services and the subject fled. The subject, Stephen Washburn (31) of Heber, went into a business nearby and threatened the owner with a knife and asked for help because he had been shot. The owner was able to leave the building and Stephen left the area in a vehicle. Navajo County Deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle matching the description and Stephen was arrested for a valid and confirmed warrant. Stephen was cleared by a medical facility for his wound and booked into Navajo County Jail. Criminal Investigators contacted the homeowner where the shooting occurred. The homeowner advised Stephen walked into the residence through the front door around 2:00 pm, Stephen was holding two knives at the time and threatened the homeowner. The homeowner told Stephen to leave the residence, when Stephen advanced towards the homeowner, he shot Stephen in the leg. On November 23, 2021, Investigators executed a search warrant on the residence where the shooting occurred. Items of evidence were located and collected. This investigation is still ongoing. ###
